Police in Fukuoka Prefecture have arrested a man after he allegedly called a Fukuoka school threatening to kill any schoolgirls wearing socks covering their ankles.

According to Fukuoka Prefectural Police, on April 28 at about 1:50 p.m., the suspect, a 48-year-old male company worker and resident of Munakata, Fukuoka, used a public phone to made a threatening phone call to a joint junior and senior high school located in Munakata City. During this call the suspect threatened to kill any female students wearing socks that covered their ankles, reportedly saying "If I see any female students wearing socks up to their ankles, I will kill them. You got it?"

After school was dismissed teachers and staff patrolled the area in and around the school in order to ensure the safety of the students.

The suspect was arrested on May 18 under suspicion of having forcibly interfered with the functioning of the school. The suspect has admitted to the allegations and was quoted by police as saying "I like the bare legs of female students wearing school uniforms."

Police also revealed that the call made on April 28 was only the latest in a series of gradually threatening phone calls that several schools in the area had been receiving since roughly this time last year. In total these schools received a few dozen of these calls, including ones in which the caller said things such as "Don't let them (female students) wear black long tights." and "If you let them (female students) wear tights, I'll attack them."
