On Wednesday (Apr. 12), police in Okayama Prefecture, Japan, revealed that they had arrested a 57-year-old man who allegedly cut off hair from the head of a 19-year-old woman because the sight of her long hair caused him to become excited.

According to Okayama Prefectural Police, on the evening of April 10 the suspect went to a bookstore located in the Naka Ward of Okayama City. At about 8:40 p.m., he approached a 19-year-old female company worker from behind and used a “scissors-like object” to cut off some of her hair while she was standing in front of a bookshelf reading.

The woman noticed the suspect’s actions and took him over to a store employee in order to explain what had happened. However, during this exchange the man fled the scene.

Police used eyewitness reports and security camera footage to identify the suspect.

The suspect was arrested earlier this week (Apr. 11) on suspicion of assault. He has admitted to the allegations, reportedly telling police “I saw the long hair and became aroused so I cut it and smelled it.”

Police are currently investigating whether the suspect has any connection to several similar incidents that occurred roughly about a year ago at other bookstores in the area.
