According to the Tokyo Board of Education, on March 6th of last year, at about 12:30 a.m , the then teacher stole two sandwiches from a Saitama Prefecture convenience store. After exiting the convenience store the teacher, who is thought to have been significantly intoxicated at the time due to having consumed about 0.72 L of sake earlier that evening, began to walk home. However, on his way home he was hit by a car and sustained injuries that resulted in him being hospitalized until October of last year.
As police were investigating the incident, they found that the teacher was unable to prove that he had purchased the sandwiches from the convenience store. They also found security camera footage of the man stealing the sandwiches.
Police arrested the teacher this past January for theft. However, they did not press charges.
Following the announcement of his six month suspension, the teacher announced that he would be resigning.
The teacher has apologized for his actions, saying "I do not remember [what happened that day] but I apologize for the great trouble that I have caused to the school and all those related to it."
