An intoxicated man in Osaka fell off a train platform and had a portion of his left leg cut off by a train that ran him over

The incident occurred shortly before 7 a.n. on December 31st at the Nagai Station of Osaka’s Midosuji Subway Line. Police said that the man, who is thought to be in his 20s, seemed to be intoxicated at the time of the incident. The conductor of the train did not notice that the man had fallen onto the tracks, resulting in the man getting his left leg cut off below the knee when the train departed from the station.

The platform did not have any protective railings to guard against falling.

Protective railing/door systems are something that more and more railway companies have been installing onto train platforms over the past several years. They not only help guard against these sorts of accidents but they also help make it more difficult for people to commit suicide by jumping in front of oncoming trains. Although these systems are not cheap, given the large amount of people that make use of trains in Japan it certainly seems like a worthwhile investment.
